Changing Your Mind
Posted: Wed, 08/06/2008 - 8:45pmImagine you've been at your job for a while. It's okay. But you start thinking maybe you need a change. So, you decide to change gears. You say goodbye to all of your friends at work, and try something new. And a few months later, you realize you've made a mistake. You mention to a couple of friends that you miss your old job. Word gets back to the powers that be that you want to get back to business. But they've filled your job, and even though you've done good work for them for many many years, they don't have room for you anymore. Is that their fault? They've moved on.
Remind you of anyone?
This is the scenario we've lived with in Packer Nation constantly for the last few weeks. I love Brett Favre, but I am afraid that I am siding with the team. He made his bed, now he has to accept the consequences.
So back to our scenario, the CEO of your ex-company hears about how you want to come back. He orders your ex-boss to make room for you. Your office is occupied by someone else, your pay has been re-allocated to others. Bringing you back is a budgetary headache. You show up and people start to whisper about how they'll have to make huge adjustments to the budget and even though they are nice to your face, you know they are worried. These people used to be your friends. Now they are resenting you.
Brett Favre hasn't been part of the team in the last few months. He was one person on that team, and you can bet that when he retired some people looked forward to getting more attention, not just supporting the star. Now that he's back, and with such drama, do you think there isn't some resentment? After all, no one is talking about the draft picks that the Pack picked up or the developing young talent, or even the aging greats like Driver or Al Harris. They are talking about Brett Favre.
He can't practice with the team, because the practices are public. And if there is a competition for QB, the crowds will double or triple. They'll scream and the coaches won't be able to make themselves be heard. The athletes won't be able to concentrate and there'll be frustration. These aren't angelic creatures by any means, and when they hit, they mean it. Would Brett Favre "accidently" get hurt due to bad feelings and frustration? How much is he going to help the team then? It's not safe for him to be around.
Back to our scenario, your replacement changed how your work was done, and no one wants to go back to the old system. You try to explain why you did things the way you did, and no one cares. You are ostrasized. Is this how you thought this will go?
I'll miss Brett Favre if he gets sent to another team, but for the sake of the team, for the sake of everyone, he can't stay with Green Bay. It's too late. You can't go home again. Best Wishes, Brett. Now get out.
Yes, I know I'll be flamed for this. I don't care. It's about the Team. Not one man.

No flaming here. Your comments are right on! And I live within view (okay, it's about a 10 miles away-view from my 5th story condo) of Lambeau. I saw Brett's last pass from inside the stadium. It's over.
